FAQs
Our Most Asked Questions
Is there a delivery charge and minimum spend?

Due to the nature of our goods, they require a chilled delivery that arrives the next day once dispatched. Some post codes, usually in Northern Scotland, require a two day transit, and our goods are packaged to withstand transit for this long.

There is a minimum spend of £10.

We invest in thick walled cardboard boxes, insulative wool liners and ice packs. This allows us to dispatch our produce fresh and the temperature of the box is maintained during transit.

How long does raw milk last?

When the raw milk is dispatched to you it has around 7 days shelf life, but the date has been clearly stamped on the bottle, so please check this.

Is the raw milk safe?

Yes, absolutely it is as nature intended! The key is hygiene, sales of our raw milk are strictly regulated by the Food Standards Agency on a daily basis it is produced in clinically clean conditions, goes from “teat to tank” without contacting the air, and is cooled to 2° within 5 minutes. There are only a handful of farms that are licensed to sell raw milk and we are one of the only organic ones.

Is the milk unpasteurised?

Yes. Raw means the same as unpasteurised.

What does unhomogenised mean?
As part of processing most milk is homogenised which means the cream is mixed up into the rest of the milk in a uniform way. Homogenised milk has been treated (shaken up with great force), to prevent particles of fat from rising to the top. When you do this, the size of the fat globules change and the fat and protein molecules are also rearranged.
Before homogenisation became the norm, you will remember that milk used to have a cream line at the top, and Gazegill’s raw, unhomogenised, organic milk has this cream line.
Can I freeze the organic raw milk?

Yes, our organic raw milk freezes well and the nutrient value is maintained. Depending on how much you drink we suggest keeping up to two bottles in your fridge and the rest in the freezer, taking them out as and when you are running low. Many of our customers do this and have never indicated a change in taste or quality.

Why is your milk out of stock?

During the colder months of the year our cows produce less milk as they have to conserve more energy to keep warm, which means they produce less milk. We prioritise our subscription customers before any other stock is made available on the website. When we have spaces available for milk subscriptions, they will become available online. We do not have a waiting list.

Do you use glass or plastic bottles?

Currently, we use recyclable plastic bottles. Whilst glass would be a superior product in terms of re-use and recycling, it is not financially viable as the processes needed to use glass bottles all require masses of energy and water and do not offset the carbon footprint any more than a lightweight, recyclable plastic bottle.

Is your milk A1 or A2?

We can presume our milk is A2. This is because our cows are heritage shorthorns rather than the modern high yielding breeds. To determine for sure would require extensive genetic testing (dna testing) of each cow which is costly. We run a closed herd, meaning all our cows are bred on site, as a result we can trace the lineage of each of our cows over 20 years. We also have customers that are A1 intolerant who are consuming our milk.

What breed of cows do you keep and Why?

The cows here at Gazegill are organic, free range, grass fed Shorthorns. They are smaller than most modern breeds of cows. They take in less food and can thrive on low protein diets. This makes them perfect for an organic system. They are happy to graze over pasture and meadow alike and do not need concentrated grains or corn to keep them full.

What is the fat content of the milk?

This can be anything between 3.5% - 5.25% depending on the time of year. Mid-winter on the dry hay feed the fat is high. Mid-August when they are on the lush ‘fog’ grass (new growth after they hay is cut) the fat is at its lowest but the protein is high making for a more balance intake of fats and proteins when we need them most.

Organic Meat
Is your meat grass-fed?

We are 100% grass-fed, this means our animals are out feeding on our organic meadows for ⅔ of the year and then because the grass doesn't rejuvenate itself as well in winter, we harvest the grass in July/August and this feeds the animals for the remaining ⅓ of the year.

Is everything organic?

All our milk, beef, veal, lamb, mutton, chicken, pork, bacon, gammons, sausages, burgers, cheese are organic and certified by UK organic certifying bodies. We also stock a range of organic deli items unless stated otherwise. If they are not organic they are Fairtrade or ethically produced and we think they complement our range whilst fitting with our ethos.

Is your meat delivered fresh?

Yes our meat is delivered fresh, some items such as marrow bones are delivered frozen but this is clearly stated on the product. Our butchers prepare each order the day before your order is delivered to ensure your produce is as fresh as possible.

Some items may be dispatched frozen, which are clearly stated on the product.

Can I freeze the organic meat?

Our organic meat is delivered fresh so you can freeze it. A couple of products are previously frozen and this is clearly stated if so.

Is your Bacon nitrate-free?

Yes, our Bacon is nitrate-free. Our butchers produce our Organic Bacon using a simple, natural cure recipe with no added nitrates/nitrites, no added water, no artificial preservatives, and no phosphates.

Recycling Our Packaging
Boxes

Cardboard Boxes: We support a local cardboard manufacturer that prints and delivers our recycled and recyclable cardboard box to us just a few miles down the road. Then by hand a member of staff constructs every single one ready for your order to be packed up. We are working toward using paper tape to provide extra security and structural integrity. This makes the box 100% recyclable. You can now dispose of the entire box as is by using your local council’s paper/cardboard waste collection service, visit a tip or add it to your compost.

The boxes cannot be reused by us - this is something we are investigating but ideally, we would be running our own courier service to manage this effectively. We also have to consider damage as a result of tape and the cross contamination of goods.

How to recycle: Cardboard. Repurpose/Dispose of with paper and cardboard collection according to local council guidelines/Add to compost

Wool Liners

We have researched the most sustainable material for us to keep your orders cool and reduce our carbon footprint. We have tried using plastic foil liners which proved effective, they were lightweight and a great way to insulate however the type of plastic used to do so and the amount we needed has become a burden to our customers and the environment. We have found at a steep cost but the most effective and sustainable form of insulation is wool liner; unrivalled in the world of food deliveries.

Ice Packs

We use two different ice packs:
Foil and Fabric, this item is not recyclable and must be disposed of. The gel is an inert substance and can be drained.

Puffin Eco Ice pack, collect 5 and return with a minimum of 10 wool liners (Please add no more than 5 gel packs to the liners as the return service is weight sensitive).

How to recycle: Return or dispose with other general waste according to local council guidelines.

Sausage/Burger/Meatball trays

We use cardboard trays which are recyclable and we use absorbent pads and cling film which are not, however it keeps our products in great condition. We are experimenting with alternatives to get your items to you as fresh as possible whilst being environmentally friendly.

How to recycle:
Cardboard tray: rinse and recycle/add to your compost.
Absorbent pad and cling film: dispose with other general waste according to local council guidelines.

Vacuum Packs

We would love to be 100% plastic free however we have not found a solution to maintain the quality of our meats in transit effectively without vacuum packing. The most eco-friendly way we have found to avoid compromising our quality is a recyclable plastic vacuum pack. We are so pleased to have discovered this alternative and we will be phasing out old stock. To distinguish between the two, the recyclable ones will be printed.

How to recycle:
Plastic: Rinse and dispose with other general waste according to local council guidelines.
Printed Recyclable Plastic: Rinse and add to recyclable plastic waste, according to local council guidelines.
