Animal Welfare
Animal welfare forms the foundation of everything we do at Gazegill, and paramount to this is ensuring the highest standards of welfare possible from the moment an animal is born, until an animal's life ends.
In our decades of having a farm shop, and now our online store, our customers are becoming more and more conscious about the meat they eat, where it comes from, and how it was raised from birth to slaughter.
Where do we slaughter our animals
Red Meat
All of our red meat (beef, lamb, pork) is slaughtered at a small abbatoir in Preston about 40 minutes from the farm. We have worked with this abbatoir for decades, and have a very close relationship with the team there which allows for as smooth a process as possible.
When the time comes, our animals are transported in small groups via good old fashioned Land Rover with trailer-in-tow by our co-owner Ian, and then unloaded with the experienced team at the abbatoir, where each animal is handled carefully with respect to make it as stress free as possible.
Animals are slaughtered by using a captive bolt, which ensures the animal feels no pain as it is immediately made unconscious and can feel no pain before bleeding.
White Meat
All of our white meat (poultry) is sourced from Otter Valley Organic, who are a family run poultry farm with their own specialist poultry abbatoir. When it comes to slaughter, their birds go through an electrical stunning system where the are made unconscious and do not feel any pain, and are then bled.
We do not follow any religious slaughter
None of our animals are slaughtered via any method of religious slaughter. All slaughter we follow is fully non-recoverable and ensures the animals feel no pain throughout the process. We would never consider using any method of religious slaughter.
